Scientists at the University of Cambridge have discovered that common bacteria found in the gut can ‘trap’ some common drugs, stopping them being absorbed into the bloodstream.
They exposed 15 drugs including the antidepressant duloxetine and the asthma medication montelukast to 25 common bacteria species found in the gut.
Writing in the journal Nature, the researchers said Doctors may in the future need to consider how each patients gut micro-biome might interact with drugs before prescribing them.
