A study of women over 60 found that walking up to 4,500 steps a day (even if only in short bursts rather than all in one go) significantly reduces the chance of death from all causes. Compared with taking no steps at all, every additional 1,000 steps were associated with a 28 per cent decrease in death!
A US study involved some 16,732 women over a six year period during which 804 participants died. Researchers found that taking more than 2,000 steps daily in an uninterrupted walk cut the risk of death by 32 per cent.
