A new study from the University of Buffalo in New York shows how important it is to reduce daily time spent sitting. Women aged over 55 can halve their chance of heart failure by sitting for less than four and a half hours a day.
Researchers followed 81,000 post-menopausal women who had never had a heart issue. After nine years 1,402 had suffered heart failure. Women who said that they sat for more than eight hours of their waking day had a 54 percent higher risk than those who sat for just four and a half hours!
Dr. Michael LaMonte who led the research said : “The study shows that we need to reduce sedentary time and it might simply be standing up for five minutes every half hour”.
